More than 500 people have been injured after a meteor strike in central Russia, the country's interior ministry said.
Fragments of at least one meteorite were seen falling from the morning sky in the Chelyabinsk region at around 9am local time, around 1,500km east of Moscow.
Witnesses described feeling a pressure wave and hearing explosions overhead as the object hurtled to earth. Windows shattered and there were localised power cuts, sparking panic among residents.

But this isn't just about one incident. Space rocks are becoming an increasing problem and it appears that we are doing very little to combat it. This month alone, I have experienced three separate occasions where meteors have broken up in our atmosphere.
We've all seen the movies where a group of scientists are given the almost impossible task of blowing up and destroying a large meteor heading towards Earth. However this, like a lot of movies, is Hollywood make belive because we currently can't predict meteors from far enough away, and this is the real problem: time. If we could detect meteors, there is technology that could prevent it from hitting Earth.
Scientists and geologists are constantly working on ways of inproving and preventing natural disasters such as earthquakes, tropical storms and volcanoes but why has the deadly threat from space been forgotten about. I believe it's because it seems like a distant problem, something that would never effect us, but it has. After this tragic event hopefully people will wake up to the fact that this is a huge future, and current, problem.
Thankfully, it appears the UN has woken up to this problem because next month they plan to have talks to discuss what countries should fund and support the research. Remember, it only takes a big one to cause total destruction, after all it wiped out the dinosaurs.
